Ida, Always by Caron Levis and Charles Santoso

I am starting my Picture Book Playlist blog with the review of a new hit published on February 23, 2016, by Atheneum Books for Young Readers.

Summary:

Gus lives in a big park in the middle of an even bigger city, and he spends his days with Ida. Ida is right there. Always.

Then one sad day, Gus learns that Ida is very sick, and she isn’t going to get better. The friends help each other face the difficult news with whispers, sniffles, cuddles, and even laughs. Slowly Gus realizes that even after Ida is gone, she will still be with him—through the sounds of their city, and the memories that live in their favorite spots.

Ida, Always is inspired by a real bear friendship.

Playlist tags:

Friendship, friends, grief, loss, polar bear, Central Park.

Why I love this picture book:

I purchased this book at a writing conference because I loved the illustrations and the fact that it was a book based on a true event. I didn’t read the book until I returned home and was amazed at how well the author handled this difficult subject. A few months later I was able to recommend this book to a friend who had a loss in the family. Her young children were having a difficult time understanding and this book gave her a jumping off point to the conversation. I think it comforted the adults as well.

This is a story of unconditional love and loss, yes, but it’s also a story of moving on and knowing your loved one is with you, always.
